The Brazilian Association of Aluminum Can Manufacturers (Abralatas) reported that Brazilian beverage can production has achieved historic achievements and taken a significant step towards sustainable development. According to the 2022 Comprehensive Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Practice Report, the recycled aluminum content in beverage cans in this industry has reached a historic high.

In 2022, the industry faces a series of challenges, including a weak domestic economy and the first decline in sales of aluminum beverage cans in five years. Despite these obstacles, the recycling rate of aluminum beverage cans produced in Brazil has increased from 77% in 2021 to an impressive 80%.

During the year, the per capita consumption of beverage cans was 153 cans, equivalent to 31.8 billion cans. Although some companies such as Ball and Canpack have temporarily stopped or locked up domestic production due to demand fluctuations, the market has stabilized. With the launch of new canned beverages and the enduring appeal of sustainable canned development, Abralatas expects the industry to resume growth in the coming year.

One of the most eye-catching milestones in 2022 was Brazil achieving a 100% recycling rate. The Abralatas report states that this achievement saved 390000 tons of aluminum waste and reduced 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Brazil's can making factories are distributed throughout the country and are supported by 36 can making centers in 19 out of 26 states. In addition, various waste collection cooperatives are actively participating in strengthening recycling work.
